An Iranian commander says 36 people were killed in the unrest that followed the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June.
Abdollah Araghi, a member of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, also told reformist newspaper Etemad that among those killed were at least three detainees at Kahrizak prison, just south of Tehran.
Many protesters were held in Kahrizak following the election, but authorities shut it down after three people died in custody and reports of detainee abuse became widespread.
Araghi's figure is a little higher than Iran's official toll of about 30 deaths, but well below the opposition's estimate that more than 70 people were killed.
Thousands of protesters were arrested during street demonstrations in Tehran, and rights groups say many remain in jail.
Iran's hard-liners have stepped up pressure on the opposition this week with two separate arrests of senior aides to defeated presidential candidates Mire Hoosier Moussaka and Mehdi Karroubi.
Judiciary officials also raided the offices Karroubi, who first made the allegations that protesters were raped and tortured while in detention.
