Acura Classic: Jennifer Capriati Takes On Japan's Shinobu Asogoe - 2001-08-01


World number two women's tennis player Jennifer Capriati plays her first match of the Acura Classic tennis tournament at La Costa, California, Wednesday, taking on Japan's Shinobu Asagoe.

Capriati, the Australian and French Open champion, took over the world number two position in the latest rankings issued by the Women's Tennis Association Tour.

Also on the courts today, second-seeded Venus Williams of the United States takes on Russian Elena Bovina, who advanced when her opponent, countrywoman Elena Likhovtseva, retired with tendonitis in her right shoulder.

Also today, Sandra Cacic takes on American compatriot and fourth-seeded Lindsay Davenport, the Acura Classic champion in 1998. Fifth-seeded Kim Clijsters of Belgium plays Japan's Ai Sugiyama. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain plays her first match against Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic.

Yelena Dokic of Yugoslavia, the 15th seed, takes on Germany's Jana Kandarr in a second-round match. Kandarr eliminated Slovakia's Janette Husarova the first round (6-4, 6-4). American qualifier Alexandra Stevenson takes on 14th-seeded countrywoman Amy Frazier. Stevenson scored an easy win over Kristina Brandi of the United States Tuesday (7-6, 6-0).
