Goodwill Games Underway in Brisbane - 2001-08-29

American and Australian swimmers have dueled in the pool at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, while the European team waits for some of its stars to arrive.

The American women performed well Wednesday, with Kirsten Caverly taking the women's 200-meter breaststroke and 400-meter individual medley races. American Amy Balcerzak-Field won the women's 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke races to give the United States an 82-67 win over Europe.

The Australian women also won their meet against a world team, thanks in large part to two individual wins from world champion Petria Thomas and countrywomen Brooke Hanson and Sarah Ryan.

The Australian men's team outclassed the U.S. men, with world record holder Ian Thorpe of Australia winning the men's 200-meter freestyle and anchoring the Aussies to a win in the 400-meter medley relay.

Grant Hackett of Australia won the men's 1,500-meters and the Australians won the 400-meter freestyle relay. The final score was Australia 93.5 points and the United States, 55.5.

In individual races, five points are awarded for a win, three for second, and one for third. In relays, the winner gets seven points and the rest get none.
