Baseball: Taiwan Beats S.Korea 5-1 - 2001-11-14

Host country Taiwan has defeated South Korea, 5-1, to clinch first place in its group and the top seed in the medal round of the World Cup baseball tournament in Taipei.

Chen Ching-feng hit two singles, drove in a run with a triple and a two run home runs in the game. Chang Chih-chia struck out 12 batters and allowed six hits for Taiwan, which faces the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

South Korea takes on Japan in the final eight. The Japanese are undefeated in Group B.

Meanwhile, the United States scored a 17-0 win over France in a game that ended after seven innings on the 10 run rule. The win gives the U.S. team the second seed in the quarterfinals. The Americans will take on Panama, the third seed in Group B, in the quarterfinals.

In other Group-B matches Wednesday, Panama scored an 8-2 win over Australia and Cuba defeated Russia, 11-1. The defending champion Cubans take on the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals. The Dominicans defeated South Africa, 15-5, in a Group-A match Wednesday.

The Swiss-based International Baseball Federation organized the 16-team tournament.
