South African Men's Field Hockey Team Ties Favorite India - 2001-12-09

South Africa's men's field hockey team has played favorite India to a 2-2 draw while host country Malaysia defeated Belgium at the Champion's Challenge tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

Jugraj Singh scored on a penalty corner for India in the ninth minute. South Africa's Justin King equalized two minutes later. The Indians took the lead in the 17th minute on a penalty corner by Deepak Thakur, but South Africa tied the game for good in the 60th minute.

Meanwhile, Malaysia benefited from a controversial call in the 37th minute of its game with Japan. A long ball from Manierjit Singh glanced off a Belgian player's stick and into the goal. The Belgians said their player did not touch the ball, but the referee ruled in Malaysia's favor. The home side added another goal in the 63rd minute.

Malaysia leads the tournament with six points from two games. The winner of the Champion's Challenge will earn a berth among the world's top six hockey-playing countries at next year's Champion's Trophy tournament, one of the sport's most prestigious events.
