Former champion Thomas Enqvist of Sweden and Greg Rusedski of Britain have won their opening-round matches at the AAPT Australian men's hardcourt tennis championships in Adelaide, Australia.
The third-seeded Enqvist won the event in 1999, and easily defeated Marcelo Rios of Chile 6-0, 6-3 on Monday. The sixth-seeded Rusedski had a tougher time before beating Jacobo Diaz of Spain 6-3, 7-6.
Number-eight Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia had to work hard to make it into the second round, as he topped Michael Russell of the United States, 7-6, 7-6. But seventh-seeded Andreas Vinciguerra of Sweden was a first-round upset victim, falling to Alberto Martin of Spain, 6-3, 6-4.
In other results, Jerome Golmard of France knocked off Wayne Arthurs of Australia, 6-4, 6-0, Australian Scott Draper defeated Andrew Sa of Brazil, 6-1, 6-2, and Frenchman Michael Llodra got past South African Wayne Ferreira, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
