French Team Wins European Ice Dancing Title


Former world champions Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat of France have won the ice dancing title at the European Figure Skating championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In a program inspired by the words of U-S civil rights leader Martin Luther King Junior, the French couple received a perfect score of six out of six from one judge and earned scored five-point-eight or five-point-nine from the others.

Defending champions Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio of Italy finished second. Russians Irina Lobacheva and Ilya Averbukh were third.

Earlier, former World and European champion Maria Butyrskaya of Russia won the ladies' short program with a clean routine that earned her marks of 5.8 and 5.9 out of 6. The 29-year-old Russian leads countrywoman and defending champion Irina Slutskaya, with Viktoria Voltchkova of Russia third. The ladies free skate program is Saturday.
