Street Falls Short in Giant Slalom Event

Olympic Super Giant Slalom ski champion Picabo Street of the United States might not be able to defend her title at next month's Salt Lake City Olympics after finishing 33rd in Friday's World Cup race in Cortina D'Ampezzo Italy.

Street finished 2.61 seconds behind winner Hilde Gerg of Germany Friday, but she needed to finish in the top-30 in order to qualify for the U-S Giant Slalom team. However, the American skier could still be named as a coach's choice and can still qualify for the team in the downhill race Saturday.

The Italian event is the 30-year-old Street's last one on the World Cup tour. She won the Olympic Gold medal in the Super-G in 1998 but severely injured her knees in a fall just two months later.
