ZIMBABWE / ELECTION MONITORS - 2002-02-19

OAU Secretary General Amara Essy says the European Union should stop monitoring elections in Africa. Mr. Essy, who made the remarks Friday in the Zambia capital, Lusaka, was referring to the situation in Zimbabwe. He says elections are internal matters that must be left to individual countries. He says the “serenity of a country could be upset by foreigners trying to impose their will.” Mr. Essy says Africans do not go to Europe to monitor elections there. English to Africa reporter Kellys Kaunda has the story from Lusaka.
