Human Rights groups call for level playing field in Zimbabwe. - 2002-02-27

A number of human rights groups have issued a statement expressing concern about the political situation in Zimbabwe. They say despite promises by the Mugabe Government that there will be a level playing field for next month’s elections, reports indicate a rise in pre-election violence and state repression.

Among the groups issuing the statement are the International Crisis group, Genocide Watch, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights and South Africa’s Center For the Study of Reconciliation and Violence.

The Center’s executive director, Graeme Simpson, spoke to English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua from Johannesburg about developments in Zimbabwe.
