IN NIGERIA, THE GOVERNOR OF THE SOUTHEASTERN CITY OF ENUGU SAYS HE WILL NOT LEAVE OFFICE, DESPITE SEVERAL DAYS OF PROTESTS DEMANDING HIS RESIGNATION. GOVERNOR CHIMAROKE NNAMANI (CHI-ma-roo-KE NN-aa-MAA-nii) WAS RESPONDING TO CALLS FROM A NUMBER OF HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS AND MEMBERS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. THEY ACCUSE HIM OF HAVING A HAND IN THE DEATH OF 14 WORSHIPPERS DURING A PRAYER VIGIL IN ENUGU - A PREDOMINANTLY CATHOLIC CITY. THE GOVERNOR SAYS THE GROUPS ARE BEING USED BY HIS OPPONENTS TO UNDERMINE HIM. LAST WEEK, THE ORGANIZER OF THE PROTESTERS, REVEREND FATHER EJIKE MBAKA, VOWED THERE WILL BE NO PEACE UNLESS THE GOVERNOR RESIGNS.IGBONNEKWU OGAZIMORA (ee-BOH-nee-KUU oh-gah-zee-MOO-rah) IS THE GOVERNOR'S SPECIAL ASSISTANT ON MEDIA MATTERS. HE SAYS THE GOVERNMENT IS WORKING HARD TO DETERMINE HOW THE VICTIMS DIED. HE GAVE REPORTER CHINEDU OFFOR THE GOVERNOR'S SIDE OF THE STORY.
