Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa says he will step down if the Supreme Court rules the December 27th general elections were rigged.

The president made the pledge (Wednesday) in Lusaka during a meeting with visiting members of the European Parliament. The parliamentarians told Mr. Mwanawasa they backed an E-U report saying the voting and counting procedures were seriously flawed.

The high court began hearings last month on an opposition bid to invalidate the December vote, in which Mr. Mwanawasa was elected Zambia's third president.
