Ghana's Interior Minister has resigned in the wake of this week's deadly violence between rival clans that left at least 25 people dead, including a traditional ruler.
Minister Malik al-Hassan Yakubu submitted his resignation late Thursday, one day after clashes between the Andani and Abudu clans in the northern town of Yendi. The minister is also a member of parliament for the Yendi region.
On Wednesday, a crowd of Abudu attackers stormed the palace of the traditional king of the Dagomba ethnic group, who belongs to the Andani clan. King Ya-Na Yakubu Andani and at least 24 of his followers were killed in the violence, while the king's palace was set ablaze. Reports say several people were also set on fire.
Ghanaian President John Kufuor declared a state of emergency over the Yendi area after the violence. The government also says it has sent military reinforcements to the region, which is located about 500 kilometers north of Accra, the capital.
Analysts say the two clans have traditionally competed for the leadership of the Dagombas.
