Nigeria / Human rights - 2002-04-03

The Nigerian government says it is taking steps to identify soldiers who carried out reprisal killings in Benue State. Information minister Jerry Gana told English to Africa reporter Chinedu Offor that the government has set up a panel of inquiry to collect information from all those affected. He was reacting to a report by the group Human Rights Watch that criticized the government for failing to punish soldiers who carried out the raid. He says government was taking its time to ensure that only the guilty are punished. Mr. Gana says the report was not accurate and in his words "could re-open old wounds."
