Three West African Countries Conduct Joint Military Maneuvers - 2002-04-16


Troop deployment has begun at the borders between Liberia and Guinea. The exercise which started Monday is part of an earlier agreement among Mano River Union countries - Liberia,Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Military officials of the MRU say the joint deployment is intended to build confidence among troops of the three countries to reduce border tensions.

A battalion size of Liberian military personnel has just left for the border region.

Liberia's Defense Minister addressed the troops before their departure.
