Spain Tops Group B, Advances to World Cup Round of 16

Spain has finished first round play in South Korea at the World Cup football finals by winning all three of its matches.

The Spaniards had already clinched a berth in the second round by winning their first two matches, but they did not let up, beating South Africa in Daejeon, 3-2. The South Africans had needed a tie to be certain of advancing, and twice they came back from one-goal deficits. But Raul's second goal of the match in the 56th minute put Spain ahead to stay. So Spain wins Group B with the maximum nine points.

Paraguay grabbed second place on total goals with a 3-1 win over Slovenia in Seogwipo. Slovenia scored first in the match, just before halftime. Paraguay scored all three of its goals in the second half playing with 10 men, after Carlos Paredes got his second yellow card for a rough tackle and expulsion in the 22nd minute. The crucial third goal Paraguay needed to reach the second round came in the 84th minute from Nelson Cuevas, who also scored his team's first goal in the 66th minute.

Paraguay and South Africa finished even, with four points apiece and a zero goal differential, but Paraguay advances on total goals scored with six, compared to South Africa's five.

In the second round Spain will play Ireland and Paraguay will face Germany.
