Turkey Advances to World Cup Round 2

update

Turkey's football team has reached the second round of the World Cup by scoring a 3-0 victory over China in Seoul, South Korea.

The battle for second place in Group C, behind Brazil, came down to goal difference. Turkey ended up getting more than it needed here, with a 3-0 shutout of China.

It pulled the Turks even with Costa Rica on four points. However, because the Costa Ricans lost to Brazil in nearby Suwon, 5-2, they finished with a -1 goal difference, while Turkey finished with +2.

Knowing their predicament coming into the match, the Turks struck quickly -getting two goals in the first nine minutes against China. They added their final goal, five minutes from time. China goes home from its first-ever World Cup with three losses and failure to score a goal.

Brazil, on the other hand, ties Germany for the most goals, with 11, after getting the five against Costa Rica. Their first goal was knocked into the net by a Costa Rican player, Luis Marin, in the 10th minute. The others were scored by four different Brazilians: Ronaldo (13th), Edmilson (38th), Rivaldo (62nd) and Junior (64th).

Brazil and Turkey will not know their second round opponents until Friday, when Group H finishes play in Japan.
