German Driver Lands Top Pole Position for Cadillac Grand Prix - 2002-07-20


German driver Frank Biela has won the pole for Sunday's running of the Cadillac Grand Prix of Washington race at Robert-F Kennedy stadium here in Washington.

Biela in an Audi beat teammate Rinaldo Capello of Italy by two-100ths of one second in qualifying with an average speed of 152 kilometers per hour. Audi has won all but one of the LMP-900 series races this season.

Meanwhile in the LMP 675 class, American Jon Field had the fastest qualifying time in a Lola. In the GTS Class, Canadian Ron Fellows of Ontario had the fastest qualifying time. Porsche driver Sascha Maasen was fastest in the GT category.

Meanwhile in the Trans-Am Series, Butch Leitzinger won Saturday in the Capital Trans-Am. Driving in a Chevrolet Corvette Leitzinger led for nearly the entire race. Defending Champion Paul Gentilozzi was second in a Jaguar XKR. This is Leitzinger's first season in the Trans-Am competition. Saturday's victory was his second of the season.
