Italian swimmer Luca Baldini has come from behind to win the men's five-kilometer open water race at the European swimming championships at Potsdam, Germany.
The defending world and European champion won the gold medal at Lake Templin in a time of 55:35. Baldini's time Saturday, was nearly 50 seconds better than German Thomas Lurz in second place.
The women's five-kilometer race was won by another Italian, world champion Viola Valli. Her time of 1:00:25 was little more than a second better than Hanna Miluska of Switzerland.
