Ivanova Wins Women's 20k Walk at European Athletics Championships - 2002-08-07


World champion Olimpiada Ivanova has led a Russian one-two in the women's 20-kilometer walk race at the European Athletics championships in Munich, Germany.

The 31-year-old Russian won in a season's best time of 1:26:42. Countrywoman Yelena Nikolayeva claimed the silver medal (1:28.20) while Erica Alfridi of Italy won the bronze medal (1:28.33).

The race marked the debut of the women's 20k walk at the European championships.

Later, Britain's Dwaine Chambers chases the gold medal in the men's 100-meters race. Double Olympic and world long jump champion Heike Dreschler of Germany could make history by becoming the first female athlete to win five successive European titles in the same event.
