One year ago, Afghanistan was in the grip of the Taleban and al-Qaida. Afghans had few rights, and after more than two decades of invasion, civil war and repression, few Afghans held any hope for the future.
Now, one year later, the Taleban and al-Qaida are largely gone, a new Afghan army and police force are taking shape, and a transitional government is in place.
Still, as VOA's Jim Teeple reports in this edition of Dateline, factional fighting, an assassination attempt against President Hamid Karzai and a bombing that killed more than two dozen people in Kabul recently, has many Afghans wondering whether their hard-earned security is only a temporary phenomenon.
