Malian Government Resigns - 2002-10-12

The office of Mali President Amadou Toumani Toure says the country's government has stepped down Saturday.

No official reason was given for the resignations of Prime Minister Ahmed Mohamed Ag Hamani and his cabinet. State media quote the presidential statement as saying Mr. Toure has accepted the resignations and thanked Prime Minister Ag Hamani for his efforts over the past four months.

The cabinet was formed in June, one month after President Toure was elected. The prime minister's government oversaw July's legislative elections in which neither of Mali's two dominant political factions won a clear majority in parliament.

Observers say the resignations are a sign that a cabinet reshuffle could take place within the next few days.
