Many Election Races Too Close to Call - 2002-11-05

President Bush casts his ballot today near his Texas ranch in an election that will determine which political party controls the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. On the eve of the election, the president made one last pitch for votes in Dallas, Texas.

George W. Bush is not on the ballot, but his legislative agenda and his presidential prestige could be severely effected by the election outcome.

Currently, Democrats narrowly hold the Senate while Republicans have a slim majority in the House of Representatives. Throughout the campaign, the president urged voters to give the Republicans total control of Congress. "These are candidates we can be proud of," he says. "These are people that you can have confidence in!"

Traditionally, the party in power at the White House loses seats in Congress in elections held midway through a president's first term in office. Aides say President Bush hopes to create history with Republican gains.
