NFL Conference Championships Set for Sunday - 2003-01-19

update

The Philadelphia Eagles meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while the Oakland Raiders host the Tennessee Titans with a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII on the line in the National Football League Sunday.

In the National Conference championship game in Philadelphia, the Eagles will try to continue a trend of eliminating Tampa Bay from the playoffs. For the past two years the Eagles have beaten the Bucs in wild-card games. Tampa Bay failed to score any touchdowns in both losses, falling 21-3 in 2000 and 21-9 last January. The Eagles also beat the Bucs 20-10 in October.

Meanwhile in Oakland, California, the Oakland Raiders will try to avoid a repeat of last season's American Conference championship game in which they lost to the New England Patriots. Oakland has not reached the Super Bowl since 1984, and now only the Tennessee Titans stand in their way.

Tennessee last played in the Super Bowl in 2000 when they lost to the Saint Louis Rams on the last play of the game. The last time the Titans played Oakland was September 29th when the Raiders scored a 52-25 win. NFL Most Valuable Player Rich Gannon threw for 381 yards in that game.

The winners Sunday advance to Super Bowl 37 next week in San Diego, California.
