South African golf star Ernie Els has won his second straight tournament in Hawaii, the Sony Open in Honolulu. In the process, Ernie became the first player in 14 years to capture the first two PGA tournaments of the season.
On January 12th, Els set a new PGA scoring record, shooting 31 under par, to win the Mercedes Championships at Kapalua.
In Honolulu, Ernie finished the four rounds tied with American Aaron Baddeley. Both shot a 16-under-par total of 264. However, Els sank a 17-meter birdie putt on the second playoff hole for the victory.
The South African earned $810,000 for his second victory in Hawaii. That gives Els nearly two million dollars in prize money so far in 2003.
