Kenyan soccer authorities have bowed to government pressure to withdraw the country's under-17 team from the African championships, and have forfeited Saturday's match against Ethiopia.
The Kenyan Football Federation announced the withdrawal February 18. Controversy has been swirling around Kenyan soccer in recent days. The Federation earlier vowed to defy a directive from the country's Sports Ministry to pull out of the continental championships.
The Kenyan team was accused of cheating on the age of its players.
The secretary of the Kenyan Federation said that after investigating the matter, it believed the match against Ethiopia should be forfeited. The decision was also been sent to the Confederation of African Football, the Ethiopian Football Association and to the match official.
