Seventeen Charged With Treason In Sierra Leone - 2003-03-03

update

In Sierra Leone, 17 people accused of trying to overthrow the government were formally charged with treason Monday.

The defendants, sixteen men and one woman, allegedly held secret meetings in January to plot against the government. Prosecutors also allege that the armed attack on the military engineering base on January 13th was also part of the plot.

Authorities are also looking for former military ruler Johnny Paul Karoma. They say he, too, will most likely face treason charges. A five thousand dollar reward has been posted for information leading to his arrest.
