update

Australian cyclist Robbie McEwen has beaten Italian Alessandro Petacchi to win the fourth stage of the Tour of Italy, but Petacchi retains the leader's pink jersey.

McEwen finished the 170-kilometer ride from Acquappesa Marina to Vibo Valentia in four hours 25 seconds. Petacchi was second with Austrian rider Bernhard Eisel third.

Petacchi remains the overall leader, 29 seconds ahead of countryman Stefano Garzelli. Another Italian, Francesco Casagrande, is third overall, 39 seconds behind the leader.

Wednesday's fifth stage is a 176-kilometer ride from Messina to Catania in Sicily and skirts Italy's only active volcano, Mount Etna. The Tour ends June first.
