DC United Prepares for Friendly Against Blackburn Rovers - 2003-07-23

Major League Soccer's D.C. United hosts the English Premier League's Blackburn Rovers Wednesday night in international friendly match at RFK Stadium here in Washington. United has done well in exhibitions against Premier League teams.

The game marks the first-ever meeting between the two sides and D.C. United's second friendly against a storied English club this season. The Black-and-Red defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on May 14, and have three wins, no losses and one draw against English teams since 1997.

Tottenham captured the 2002 League Cup, and finished a respectable sixth in the league this season, which qualifies them to play in the UEFA Cup.

United will have to face Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who had 37 league appearances and 15 shutouts in the 2003 season. He was also named to the English Premier League Team of the Year, the first American ever to achieve that honor.

Brad Friedel is also a member of the U.S. Men's National Team and is the second-most capped goalkeeper in the squad's history. His strong performance last summer helped the United States advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
