Baseball: Yankees Defeat Athletics 10-7 - 2003-08-03

In Major League Baseball, New York's Jason Giambi hit a three-run home run to help the Yankees beat Athletics' star pitcher Barry Zito in a 10-7 contest in Oakland.

Zito lasted just three innings Saturday, giving up eight runs.

The Yankees' lead in the American League East division swelled to four and a half games as the second place Boston Red Sox dropped their fourth straight game. The Baltimore Orioles came from behind with seven runs in the sixth inning to beat the visiting Red Sox 10-8.

Seattle's John Olerud hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to power the host Mariners to a 10-0 bashing of the Chicago White Sox.

The other American League winners were the Royals, Tigers, Rangers and Blue Jays.

The Kansas City Royals ended a four-game losing streak with a 10-8 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Detroit Tigers beat the host Minnesota Twins for the first time in 17 games, coming away with a 9-2 decision. The Texas Rangers notched their fourth straight win by defeating the visiting Cleveland Indians 9-7. And the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Angels 6-1 in Anaheim.

In the National League, St. Louis rookie Bo Hart hit his first career grand slam, as the Cardinals built a seven-run lead by the seventh inning in New York, then held on to beat the Mets 10-9.

The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied with two runs in the top of the ninth inning to edge the Cubs 4-3 in Chicago, snapping a six-game losing streak.

The other National League winners were the Reds, Braves, Marlins, Pirates and Expos, while the Padres and Phillies split a doubleheader.

The Cincinnati Reds used a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the San Francisco Giants 5-4. The Atlanta Braves got by the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4. The Florida Marlins beat the Houston Astros 5-2 in Miami. The Pittsburgh Pirates squeaked by the visiting Colorado Rockies 1-0. The Expos defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1 in Montreal. The San Diego Padres downed the Phillies 6-4 in the first game of the doubleheader in Philadelphia, before the Phillies came back to beat the Padres 10-4 in the nightcap.
