Carlos Arroyo scored 24 points and Sharif Fajardo added 19 in Santo Domingo Sunday, as Puerto Rico edged the United States men's basketball team 86-85 at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic.
Andre Barrett, who led the United States with 16 points, missed an off-balance jump shot at the buzzer that would have given his team the win. It was the Americans' second close game in two nights, as they rallied to beat Argentina 80-79 on Saturday.
The win was a big one for the 2-0 Puerto Ricans, who can clinch first place in their group with a win over Argentina on Monday. The United States now must defeat Uruguay Monday night to advance to the semifinals.
Argentina fell to 0-2 in the Americans' group when poor foul shooting down the stretch hurt it once more in an 84-81 loss to Uruguay.
