World Athletics Championships to Have Busy Opening Day

The first full day of competition Saturday at the ninth World Athletics championship will be a busy one, with the top track and field athletes from around the world competing in 17 different disciplines at the Stade de France outside of Paris.

The first gold medal to be handed out will be in the men's 20-kilometer walk, which will get under way early Saturday morning, at 0630 UTC.

The two other gold medals up for grabs on Day One include the men's shot put event and the women's 10,000 meters. The women will run their opening heats in the 100-meter sprint, culminating in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

Several events in the women's heptathlon will also be contested on the opening day, while qualifying will begin in the shot put, hammer throw, triple jump, pole vault, high jump and discus throw.

Opening qualifying heats will be run in the 100, 400, 800 and 1,500 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
