Shell Oil Workers Strike In Nigeria - 2003-08-28

Nigerian workers from Shell oil company have gone on strike to protest a company plan to restructure the multinational corporation.

Shell officials say the strike began Wednesday and is continuing Thursday.

Employees say they are worried Shell's plan, called a globalization policy, will lead to job losses anddiscrimination against Nigerian workers. The strike is organized by Nigeria's powerful oil union, PENGASSAN.

Staff at Shell's Nigeria's offices say, so far, production has not been affected by the work stoppage.

The protest is the latest crisis to hit foreign oil companies operating in Nigeria in recent months. Ethnic violence in the oil rich Niger Delta region has forced Shell and other major companies to cut back production.
