Rebels fighting the Ugandan government have killed at least 33 people in a recent spate of violence in the northeastern part of the country.
In the latest attack Monday, fighters from the Lord's Resistance Army killed at least 19 civilians when they ambushed a bus in the Soroti district, about 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Kampala.
Rebels have also killed at least 14 others in separate raids on villages in the region over the last few days. Reports say the attacks have been particularly brutal - with civilians found hacked or bludgeoned to death.
LRA rebels have been fighting since 1987 to overthrow Uganda's government and replace it with one based on the biblical Ten Commandments. The group is notorious for abducting children and forcing them to serve in its ranks. They also routinely attack refugee camps and terrorize the local population.
