Pakistani Court Sets Date for Final Arguments in Musharraf Assasination Attempt Case - 2003-09-27

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has set October 11 for final arguments in the trial of five Islamic militants accused of planning last year to kill President Pervez Musharraf. The trial began in Karachi in April.

Police said the defendants plotted to carry out the assassination during President Musharraf 's visit to Karachi in April of last year. Authorities said a remote-controlled bomb was planted in a car parked along the route the president was traveling. They said the bomb failed to go off because the detonator malfunctioned.

The accused are suspected members of a militant group known as Harkat ul-Mujahedeen al-Alaami. The group is an offshoot of Harkat-ul-Mujahedeen, a group that has been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.
