Calleri Reaches 2nd Round of Kremlin Cup Tennis Tourney - 2003-09-30


Second seeded Agustin Calleri of Argentina has reached the second round of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow with a straight-set win over Russian Denis Golovanov (6-2, 6-2).

Calleri's countryman Juan Ignacio Chela was not as fortunate, losing in three sets to Tuomas Ketola of Finland (6-4, 6-7, 7-5). Stefan Koubek of Austria scored a straight-set win over Mikhail Youzhny of Russia (7-6, 6-0).

In other matches, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic (6-2, 6-4). Marc Rosset of Switzerland defeated David Prinosil of Germany (6-1, 6-1). Armenia's Sargis Sargsian ousted Filippo Volandri of Italy (6-1, 6-2).

In the women's draw, Greek player Eleni Daniilidou ousted eighth-seeded American Meghann Shaughnessy in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). Francesca Schiavone of Italy scored a three-set win over Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya (2-6, 6-0, 6-4). American Alexandra Stevenson defeated Jelena Dokic of Serbia-Montenegro (6-3, 6-1).

Top seed Rainer Schuettler of German has reached the third round of the AIG Open tennis tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

Schuettler scored a straight-set win over Satoshi Iwabuchi of Japan, 6-0, 6-4. Schuettler's countryman, Nicolas Kiefer, also reached the round of 16 with a straight-set win over American Alex Bogomolov, Jr. (7-5, 7-6).

In other matches, seventh-seeded Hyung-Taik Lee of South Korea defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain in three sets (6-3, 6-7, 6-3). Eighth-seeded Jan-Michael Gambill of the United States scored a straight-set win over Bohdan Ulirach of the Czech Republic (6-3, 6-4).

In the women's draw, third seed Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia defeated Evie Dominikovic of Australia (6-3, 6-3). Srebotnik next takes on Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg in the second round.

Fourth-seeded Shinobu Asagoe of Japan defeated Li Ting of China in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Maria Sharapova of Russia, the fifth seed, scored a win over Kim Jin-Hee of South Korea 6-2, 6-0. Sixth-seeded Ashley Harkleroad of the United States advanced by beating Maika Ozaki of Japan (6-0, 6-0).

American Jill Craybas ousted seventh-seeded Saori Obata of Japan (6-4, 6-2). Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland, the eighth seed, defeated Abigail Spears of the United States (6-1, 2-6, 6-4).
