Calleri's countryman Juan Ignacio Chela was not as fortunate, losing in three sets to Tuomas Ketola of Finland (6-4, 6-7, 7-5). Stefan Koubek of Austria scored a straight-set win over Mikhail Youzhny of Russia (7-6, 6-0).
In other matches, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia defeated Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic (6-2, 6-4). Marc Rosset of Switzerland defeated David Prinosil of Germany (6-1, 6-1). Armenia's Sargis Sargsian ousted Filippo Volandri of Italy (6-1, 6-2).
In the women's draw, Greek player Eleni Daniilidou ousted eighth-seeded American Meghann Shaughnessy in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). Top seed Rainer Schuettler of German has reached the third round of the AIG Open tennis tournament in Tokyo, Japan.
Schuettler scored a straight-set win over Satoshi Iwabuchi of Japan, 6-0, 6-4. Schuettler's countryman, Nicolas Kiefer, also reached the round of 16 with a straight-set win over American Alex Bogomolov, Jr. (7-5, 7-6).
