Grenada's Prime Minister Mitchell Projected to Win Re-Election - 2003-11-28

Preliminary election results point to victory for Grenada's prime minister and his New National Party.

Early tallies say the NNP has won eight of the Caribbean island's 15 parliament seats, clearing the way for a third term for Prime Minister Keith Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell welcomed the results, saying "the people realize the need for continuity." He said they "realize they had a government they can trust."

Final results have been delayed by calls for a recount by the opposition in two electoral districts where the NNP beat the National Democratic Congress by only a handful of votes.

In the last election, in 1999, the prime minister's party swept all 15 seats.
