Autralian Women Win Gold at Champions Trophy Field Hockey Tournament - 2003-12-07

Australia's women's field hockey team scored three goals in the first 15 minutes, then hung on for a 3-2 victory over China in the gold medal match at the Champions Trophy tournament in Sydney, Australia.

Julie Towers opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the match Sunday, before Suzie Faulkner tallied on a penalty corner in the 12th minute and Peta Gallagher tallied in the 15th to give the hosts the 3-0 lead.

But Fu Baorong scored for the defending champions in the 44th minute, while Li Shuang netted in the 65th for China to make the final 3-2. The win moved Australia into second place in world rankings behind Argentina.

Earlier, the Netherlands beat World Cup champions Argentina 3-2 for the bronze medal and England defeated South Korea 4-2 in a penalty shootout for fifth place after the teams were tied 2-2 after extra time.
