Zambia's President Levy Mwanawasa has warned the country faces a tough year if its economy is to improve.
In a televised New Year's Day address, Mr. Mwanawasa said his government would practice fiscal restraint and discipline to strengthen Zambia's economy.
The president said such economic moves may be painful, but they are in the best interests of Zambia in the long term.
