Kaye Wins FBR Golf Open - 2004-02-02

American golfer Jonathan Kaye emerged from the field to win the FBR Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Kaye, who earned his first PGA Tour title last year after 194 starts without a victory, shot a 4-under-par 67 Sunday to win by two strokes over Chris DiMarco. Kaye had a four-day winning total of 18-under-par 266 and took home a first prize of $936,000.

Kaye handled the pressure of playing alongside previous Phoenix winners Phil Mickelson and DiMarco, getting a firsthand view of his partners' struggles. DiMarco bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes, and Mickelson bogeyed his last three, leaving Kaye easily in front as he approached the 18th green.

Steve Flesch and defending champion Vijay Singh of Fiji both shot 66 in the final round to tie for third. Singh has now had a top-10 finish in 11 consecutive tournaments, the longest such run since Australian Greg Norman had six straight in 1993 and five more starting 1994. American veteran Jack Nicklaus set the PGA record with 14 in 1977.
