China Wins First Athens Olympics Gold Medals - 2004-08-14

China has won the first two gold medals of the Athens Olympic Games.

Wang Yifu won the men's 10-meter air pistol competition with a score of 690. Russians Mikhail Nestruev and Vladimir Isakov took second and third place.

Earlier, China's Du Li won the women's 10-meter air rifle contest, setting an Olympic record. She won the gold medal on her final shot, edging out Russia's Lyubov Galkina by a half point.

Athletes are vying for medals in 13 events during the first full day of Olympic competition Saturday. Those events include swimming, synchronized diving, men's cycling, women's weightlifting and women's judo.

Preliminary competition also has begun in rowing, swimming, gymnastics and football (soccer).

Ten-thousand athletes from more than 200 countries are competing in Greece, where the Olympics began almost 2,800 years ago.
