Cameroon to Hold Presidential Elections in October - 2004-09-11


Cameroon has announced that it will hold presidential elections on October 11.

State radio reported Saturday, that President Paul Biya has declared the day a public holiday so people will be able vote.

Mr. Biya is widely expected to stand in the elections although he has not yet formally announced his candidacy.

The French News Agency reports that several opposition figures have said they will run against him.

President Biya has been in power since 1982 when he succeeded former President Ahmadou Ahidjou.

The main opposition parties boycotted the last presidential elections in 1997.
