Iraqi PM to Address Joint Meeting of US Congress, Thursday - 2004-09-23

Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi will address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress Thursday, ahead of talks with President Bush at the White House.

Mr. Allawi's speech comes two years after U.S. lawmakers voted to authorize President Bush to go war in Iraq if Saddam Hussein did not meet Washington's demands.

Since Saddam's ouster as Iraq's leader last year, many U.S. legislators have questioned how the Bush administration has handled Iraq amid the ongoing insurgency.

President Bush said Wednesday he was glad Mr. Allawi was in Washington "to reinforce the strategy" the administration has for Iraq in these "critical times."

Following talks with Mr. Bush in New York Tuesday, the prime minister said he believes his government is winning the battle against insurgents.
