Man Arrested for Threatening to Bomb South Korean President's Home - 2004-10-03

South Korean police have detained a man after he allegedly threatened to blow up the presidential compound Saturday.

The man was arrested after driving to the Blue House in Seoul carrying at least 20 sticks of dynamite in his car. Police say he threatened to blow up the compound if his request to meet with President Roh Moo-hyun was not granted.

The incident occurred as South Korea tightened security at home and overseas after an audiotape reportedly made by al Qaida's second-in-command called on young Muslims around the world to attack the United States and other countries supporting the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.

South Korea has deployed 2,800 troops to Iraq and plans to send more.
