An international corruption watchdog has recognized two Kenyan whistle-blowers for their parts in uncovering and fighting a billion-dollar gold and diamond export scam.
Police Constable Naftali Lagat and central bank employee David Munyakei are among the winners of this year's Integrity Awards, handed out by Berlin-based Transparency International.
The group says Mr. Munyakei blew the whistle on the so-called Goldenberg Scandal. It also said Constable Lagat refused to obey orders from senior police officials whom he thought were trying to cover up the scheme.
The scandal involved government payments to Goldenberg International, a company that ran a phony gold and diamond export scheme in the 1990s.
An inquiry panel has heard testimony that then-President Daniel arap Moi had received shares in Goldenberg International, something Mr. Moi has denied.
Other award winners are from India, Turkey, Bangladesh and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
