US Shuts Out El Salvador in World Cup Football Qualifying - 2004-10-10


Brian McBride and Eddie Johnson each scored a goal to lead the United States national soccer team to a 2-0 win over El Salvador, in San Salvador. McBride scored in the 29th minute and Johnson, making his international debut, added a goal in the 75th.

The win Saturday night puts the Americans into first place in Group A in CONCACAF (North and Central American, and Caribbean) qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. The United States is undefeated (2-0-2) and leads the Group with 8 points from its four matches. Jamaica and Panama (both 1-1-2) played a 1-1 tie Saturday night in Panama City and each have 5 points. El Savador is in last place.

In Group B, Costa Rica defeated Guatemala 5-0, while Canada and Honduras played to a 1-1 draw. Guatemala leads the Group with 7 points while Honduras and Costa Rica have 6 each. Canada is last with two points.

The top two teams in each group advance to next year's final qualifying stage.
