Baseball, Softball Eliminated from 2012 London Olympics

The sports of baseball and softball have been officially eliminated from the 2012 London Olympics.

The sports were narrowly voted out at the International Olympic Committee assembly in July. The events became the first to be removed from the Olympics since polo in 1936.

Down to their final chance for reinstatement Thursday, neither sport captured the support of at least 51 percent of IOC members in Turin, Italy to reach a full vote at the annual meeting.

Because no other sports won admission, the London Olympics are left with 26 sports on the program, two short of the maximum allowed. Baseball and women's softball remain on the program for the 2008 Beijing Games, and could be readmitted to the 2016 Games.
