Cricket Experiments With Replay Technology

update

The International Cricket Council will begin experimenting with replay technology when the Super Series of three one-dayers gets underway Wednesday in Melbourne, Australia.

The experiment will continue next week during the six-day test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Field umpires will be able to refer all decisions, including leg-before-wicket and edged catches to a third official who will have access to video replays.

Some fans and players have expressed concern that delays for the examination of the replays will result in a loss of playing time and add to the already lengthy sport.

Another experimental rule being tried during the series will give each team a tactical substitution. It would allow the 12th man to bat and bowl, provided the player he replaces has not already been dismissed or bowled his allotted overs.
