Zimbabwe's main opposition group appears to be split over whether to participate in elections next month for a newly created upper house of parliament.
The leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, announced Wednesday that the party had decided to boycott the November 26 poll. But later in the day, MDC spokesman Paul Themba-Nyathi said a majority of the party's national council had voted in favor of participating.
Lawmakers approved the newly created Senate in August as part of a package of constitutional reforms proposed by President Robert Mugabe.
The opposition has strongly objected to the creation of the new upper house, calling it a ploy by the ruling party to cement its grip on power.
