LIVE BLOG: Ambush in Dallas

What began as a peaceful demonstration against police violence in Dallas Thursday night turned into a deadly ambush against police, leaving five officers dead and Americans dazed yet again in the face of gun violence and tragedy. Here are the latest updates from this developing story.

US Attorney Loretta Lynch held a press conference just now, saying her office will provide any assistance needed to the state of Texas, and offered her prayers to those killed last night.

She also said "this has been a week of profound grief..."

Recapping what we know so far:

  • Five Dallas police officers were killed by snipers Thursday night. Seven others were wounded, along with two civilians.

  • One suspect was killed by the police, who used a robot-controlled bomb after a standoff in a garage. Three others are in custody.

  • The attack happened during a protest against recent police shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana.

Brent Thompson is one of the five Dallas police officers who were gunned down last night by snipers.
